about

Lucid Giants is a hip hop duo forged in the fires of a life-long friendship and cemented by a tragic death. In a sense, their blistering debut Artificial Ignorance has been more than 30 years in the making. It’s an erudite, nuanced and mature critique of the ills of late surveillance capitalism; with its looming threats of climate catastrophe, rampant inequality and the eerie presence of tech-giants and artificial intelligence which seem poised to run out of control. This is all facilitated by a population in either in stupor – enthralled by social media, 24-hour fake news and a ceaseless stream of inane content – or else frothing at the mouth in a fevered frenzy, instigated by the febrile hate of neo-fascist populists. Artificial Ignorance takes it all in, painting a rich tapestry which weaves together deft lyricism with weighty insight, all set to the brooding backdrop of producer Konchis’s synth-laden soundscape punctuated by infectious boom-bap percussion. It’s a critical piece of art for these times of crisis.
With earliest estimates suggesting they go back as far as ‘the womb’ emcees Jody Bigfoot (Trinity Lo Fi) and Nobull the Soulful Soldier (Verbal Terrorists) have reconnected to form Lucid Giants, a veritable force to be reckoned with. Growing up in the West End of Newcastle, Bigfoot and Nobull attended both the same primary and secondary schools. In 2005, they joined Verbal Terrorists, Bigfoot on the decks (famed for his signature ‘foot-scratching’) and Nobull providing one-third of the raw, politically charged lyricism alongside ‘Easy’ Lee Halpin and Drop Dead Fred (Back Yard Rhythm Orchestra, Belta Reavers).
With rave inspired beats and incendiary vocals, Verbal Terrorists were equally at home on protests or in nightclubs firing up crowds wherever they went. The group experienced some growing pains, with Halpin leaving and local producer Mr Blazey (Grey Tapes) coming on board. In the meantime, Bigfoot established his own cult following as the driving force behind legendary Newcastle club nights Rollies for Mice and White Elephant. VT would appear regularly at the latter, sharing sell-out crowds with the likes of Skepta and JME. The group’s debut album was released in 2008 on the DIY-label White Elephant Sounds.
As VT began work on a follow-up album, Bigfoot began the first of his many global travels. The War On Terra released in 2011 with stellar guest appearances from the legendary Stic.man of Dead Prez and UK heavyweight Akala. It was an underground critical success, winning Crack Magazine’s Album of the Month, with Newcastle Free Press describing it as ‘one of the underground records of the year’. In the same year, Nobull helped past group member Halpin establish Novel Magazine as a cherished gem of the North East’s cultural scene.
Tragedy struck in 2013 when Halpin died whilst sleeping rough as part of a self-initiated documentary on Newcastle’s homelessness, a project he was collaborating with Bigfoot on. The story hit national headlines. It was Bigfoot who delivered the devastating news to Nobull, adding a bitter twist to their deep connection. Artificial Ignorance is very much dedicated to Halpin – with specific reference to him on the track ‘Legacy’. If it weren’t for him, Nobull’s dual creative outputs of lyricist and journalist might never have come to light. Halpin’s memory provides part of the impetus for Lucid Giants.
Both Nobull and Bigfoot travelled to different corners of the world in the interim. Bigfoot began establishing Trinity Lo Fi (with the occasional guest slot from Nobull) refining a raw 8-bit aesthetic across a prodigious seven-year span which spawned 4 albums and 5 EPs. Trinity Lo Fi has now disbanded and Bigfoot is making waves of his own with a more polished sound and high video production values demonstrated on his debut solo album (and accompanying feature-length music video), Duszt. As Bigfoot was shooting the scenes for Duszt inspired by both the rural beauty and frantic metropolises of Japan, in between felling giant trees in Canada, Nobull used his experience at Novel Magazine to forge a career as a journalist, writing for the Guardian on art and politics.
Artificial Ignorance brings to bear decades of the pair’s personal, political and musical experience, on the eclectic production of Glasgow’s Konchis. Lucid Giants have woken from their slumber, and they are just getting started.
